Do Testers Need Certifications?

Our recruiters often get asked by potential candidates about the significance and importance of testing certifications. There’s no magic answer. I can tell you what we have seen in the market place over the years as we have interviewed and placed hundreds of software testers.

Approximately 15% of the 3,500 testers in our database have some kind of software quality assurance and testing certification. And only rarely do we get a client that insists that we provide candidates with a certificate. However, when a candidate has a certification on their resume, there are several benefits:

  • Certifications show that testing is your career, not an interim to something else
  • Certifications demonstrate that you have a commitment to continuous learning
  • A certification on your resume may help you rank higher among other candidates
  • A certification shows you have acquired at least a foundation level understanding of testing

The bottom line is, whenever you have an opportunity to get training to obtain increased knowledge and skills you should. If there is an associated certificate that is always an added bonus for your resume! Now the question is… which certificate. That’s another blog.
