Scripting Languages - Does it matter?

All automated and load testing tools have a scripting language. Some use established languages - like VBScript others use proprietary languages that are similar to established languages but have their own flavor.

Since record and playback is just about useless, being able to create and enhance scripts by using the scripting language is vital. When considering a tool should you take in account the scripting language? If it is a proprietary scripting language you will likely not be able to take a class or buy a book on the scripting language. Also hiring someone to use the tool will require that they are at least familiar with the scripting language. If a proprietary scripting language is similar to an established language is that good enough?

What experience have you had with proprietary scripting languages - positive or negative? What about established languages? Has the use of either helped or hurt your automation effort?
